Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi Wabarakath,

I'm a bit late on wishing everyone Ramadan Kareem [Considering our first fast is already over] - I got a bit busy.

This is to wish all the Muslims around the World a blessed Ramadan.

Ramadan Kareem

It says in the Qur'an:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيۡڪُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِڪُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting)[] is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2). (2:183)

Ramadan is truly a blessed month. I cannot stress how important this month is. As Muslims we should take advantage of it because such a month does not come frequently and we do not know if we will see the next Ramadan.

1- During the month of Ramadan the gates of hell are closed and the gates of Heaven are open.

2- The dua of the fasting person will not be refused.

3-
The smell that comes from the mouth of a fasting person is better with Allaah than the scent of musk.

4-
Fasting is a protection and a strong fortress that keeps a person safe from the Fire. (Reported by Ahmad, 2/402; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/411; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 3880).

5-
Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will remove his face seventy years’ distance from the Fire. (Reported by Muslim, 2/808).

6- Whoever fasts one day seeking the pleasure of Allaah, if that is the last day of his life, he will enter Paradise. (Reported by Ahmad, 5/391; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/412).

7- In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyaan, through those who fast will enter, and no one will enter it except them; when they have entered it will be locked, and no-one else will enter through it. (al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 1797).

However, one needs to realise that only giving up food and drink is not what fasting or Ramadan is all about.

It says in two ahadith:

“When any of you is fasting, let him not commit sin…”

(Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, no. 1904).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever does not stop speaking falsehood and acting in accordance with it, Allaah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.”

(Al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, no. 1903).

So when an individual makes an intention to fast, he should make sure that his tongue, his eyes and his other limbs also fast. One needs to fast with his/her own body and soul. Keep away from backbiting, insulting others, watching T.V, and other things which which waste our time and take us away from the Ibaadah of Allah subhanna wa ta'ala. One should lower their gaze and be aware of Allah subhanna wa ta'ala. Also, if an individual is addicted to something that is haram or a sin, then the month of Ramadan is the perfect opportunity to get rid of the habit.

Secondly, we need to hasten to do good deeds this month because the reward will be multiplied. Feed the poor and open your fasts with them. This also makes a person realise how blessed one is and takes away kibr [arrogance] from the hearts. The Sahabah radi allahu anhum would make it a point to at least open one or two fasts amongst the poor and the orphans. Try and finish the Qur'an during Ramadan. Do dhikr of Allah and stand at night for Qiyaam or Tarawih. The best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.

Do not let your hearts harden and remember your grave and the day of Judgment where we will be asked all that we used to do.

And finally, we need to remember our Brothers' and Sisters' in Islam who are suffering all around the World, especially in the War-torn Countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Kashmir and Chechnya. And our innocent Brothers' and Sisters' who are in the prisons of the Kufaar and the tawaghit, like those in Guantanamo Bay and the prisons in Britain.

They cannot spend this special month with their family and loved ones, or pray in congregation with their Brothers' and Sisters' in the Masajids and neither can they wake up with their family for Suhoor. They open their fasts alone, in little cells and are treated like animals while we enjoy our Ramadan. Remember, the least you can do is make dua for them and the dua of the sincere fasting person will not be refused.

May Allah subhanna wa ta'ala accept our good deeds in this holy month, allow us to make us of it as it should be and may we all be inhabitants of Jannah. Ameen.

May Allah subhanna wa ta'ala give sabr and shifa to Muslim Prisoners who are in the prisons of the Kufaar and the tawaghit and those who are oppressed and and tortured and those who are not able to spend this blessed month with their families and loved ones. Ameen.

May Allah subhanna wa ta'ala accept the sadaqa that we give, our Prayers and our Duas. May he give us baraka in our Work and keep us away from the hell-fire. May Allah subhanna wa ta'ala protect us from harm or trials that may come our way and allow us to live till the next Ramadan. Ameen.

Ma'asalama

I have a question, Muslimah. Do Muslims care more about other Muslims who are prisoners, or do they care equally about Muslim prisoners and Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, and Atheist prisoners? After all, aren't all of these types of prisoners children of God? They were all created by God as human beings. Shall we judge them first and foremost by the religion they profess, or by their humanity?

I'm sorry for replying so late. I've been busy with ramadan.

Anonymous: Ofcourse, we care about prisoners who arn't Muslim and they have been imprisoned unjustly and without cause.

But, why Muslims have so much emphasis on other Muslim prisoners is because they are our brothers and sisters in faith. And it is our duty to free them. And secondly, today majority of the Muslims who are imprisoned in places like Guanatanamo bay, Israel, Belmarsh are political prisoners and imprisoned because they are Muslims. The torture they go through and their treatment is inhumane. May Allah subhanna wa ta'ala grant them release. ameen.

Hi Muslimah, Okay, I understand that they are your brothers and sisters in faith, but I have two questions about that:

1) Aren't Christians your brothers and sisters in faith, too, since they are "People of the Book"?

2) Shouldn't the real standard be whether or not a person is a good person, not whether they have accepted Islam? The truth is, in Christianity, we do not place Christians above non-Christians? We recommend all accept Christianity, and some ultra-conservative Christians think that only Christians will go to heaven (that's not what most Christians these days believe, just a minority). But even if you look in the New Testament (what you call the Injeel), no distinction is made by Jesus Christ on the value of a person's life whether they are a "believer" or not. The distinction concerning a person's soul is whether or not a person is good to his fellow man.

If God is all-powerful, why would He care if people worship Him, and punish those who don't worship Him?
We should worship God because we are grateful to him for creating us and the world, NOT because a book says that if we don't worship Him, we will be punished.

That is the essence of the Christian message.
