Assalam Alaykum Warahmutallahi wabarakath,

So we were doing the Tafseer of Surah Al-Ma'un [The small Kindnesses] and it really moved me because just recently, for the past two days, i'd fallen asleep during Asr and Maghrib time and woke up only 10 minutes before Maghrib and i still had to read my Asr prayer, which i did quickly. And Subhanallah, i came across a hadith just about this today.

Surah Al'Ma'un [The Small Kindnesses]
[1] Have you seen him who denies the Recompense?
[2]That is he who repulses the orphan,
[3]And urges not on the feeding of the poor,
[4] So woe unto those performers of prayers,
[5] those who delay their prayer.
[6]Those who do good deeds only to be seen,
[7]And withhold small kindesses.

[4-6] From these Ayahs we clearly see Allah s.w.t curses the people who are neglectful of their prayers.

Ibn Abbas radi Allahu Anh said that the statement refers to people who off their their prayers only to show off. In other words, if people see them, they pray, otherwise they do not.

Massuq and Abu Ad-duha take the verse to mean that such people delay the prayers from it's fixed time.

'Ata' bin Dinar said: "We thank Allah that he said 'neglectful of their prayers' and did not say 'negligent in their prarers'.

A hadith says that when the Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H was asked the meaning of this verse [5], he said, "It means those who delay their prayers beyond their fixed times."

This verse may be applied to three types of people:

  1. Those who do not pray at all.
  2. Those who pray after the time for prayer is over.
  3. Those who do not pray at the beginning of the appointed time.

The words of the verse [5] also cover those who always offer their prayer at the last hour, as well as those who do not perform the rituals of prayer properly, or do not consider the words they utter in prayer.

The Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H said: "It is the prayer of a hypocrite; it is the prayer of a hypocrite; it is the prayer of a hypocrite. A person keeps sitting until the sun is about to set, and a Satan joins his horns to it, then he rushes to stand and offer four quick Rak'ah like a cock pecking."

This hadith refers to the Asr prayer. A person is said to be offer this prayer at the end of the appointed time, without performing it properly, nor showing any humility or submission.

This is an act of hypocisy about which Allah s.w.t has said:

"Verily the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He who deceives them. And when they stand up to pray, they stand with laziness and to be seen of men and then remember Allah but little." [4:12]

Tabarani quoted a Hadith which says that Wail is the name of a valley in Hell whose fire is so intense that the Hell itself seeks refuge from it four hundred times in a day. This valley is the abode of the proud scholars, those who perform pilgrimage for show and those who fight in the way of Allah from pretentiousness.

According to a Hadith related by Imam Ahmad, the Prophet Muhammad Sallahu Allahye Wassallam said: "One who does a good deed so that it will be made known to the people, will have his punishment made known to the people and Allah S.W.T will humiliate him. "

How many of us delay our prayers frequently while we're doing other things? Subhanallah... :( It is up to us to stand up and pray when the Adhan is heard. May Allah make us steady in our Prayers. Ameen...

May Allah s.w.t forgive us our Sins, may he grant us Jannat Al firdaus, may he protect us and guide us on the straight path always. Ameen.

Inshallah i hope this was of benefit, it was to me, that is why i wanted to share this with everyone.

That is very interesting to me as I am learning about Islam! I just found your blog through ... well, I guess, Noor - and like it a LOT!!
I have a Qur'an from Medina in Arabic-English and read and try to understand more and more! I feel very close to Islam even though I was born and grew up a Christian! To me Islam is a VERY honest and peace-loving religion, family oriented - a religion which is LIVED!! I HIGHLY appreciate that!
Would you like to come visit MY blog and hear a bit about my hometown Munich? Of course right now is soccer more or less ruling - but there are LOTS of pictures! I'd be HAPPY to have you over - you're certainly MOST WELCOME!!
